Cutlery of No Use (working title) is an ongoing series of ceramic objects exploring function, value and expectation.
Each object resembles a familiar utensil, yet resists its intended purpose. Some suggest alternative ways of being used, while others offer no obvious function at all.
Rather than asking what these objects are for, the series asks how we assign function in the first place.
What happens when something no longer fulfils the role we expect of it? Is it discarded, repaired or reimagined? Can value exist beyond function, or might value emerge through a different one?
Ultimately, the works invite viewers to reflect on how usefulness is defined—and who gets to define it.
And; Is usefulness the only measure of value?
